Maldives Etiquette

Tipping is not compulsory in the Maldives as you’ll note that a 10% service charge is added to almost everything - but we recommend that, especially when faced with exceptional service, that you add at least another 10% to your bill. You’ll no doubt note that your resort or hotel will have an unseen staff tipping box - usually found in Reception or Main Restaurant and we recommend that you tip this box on a weekly basis - so for example for one week - £15-£25.

Despite the fact that Islam is the predominant religion on the islands - you’ll find that the resorts are extremely relaxed and casual dress is perfectly normal. Remember though that beachwear is not acceptable in most restaurants. If you decide to visit the capital Male, or any of the local islands, then you should dress more modestly ensuring that shoulders and thighs are covered. Topless sunbathing is against the law and against local customs so please refrain from doing it - no matter how laid back the resort that you choose appears to be.
