Peru Etiquette

As with most countries, dress conservatively when visiting churches, temples, and monasteries. At the very least, be sure to cover your skin, as many places of worship in Peru will deny entry if you're showing too much. One important tip from any Peru travel guide is to respect local customs regarding attire, especially in sacred spaces.

When you're out exploring the country, though, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear adventure or outdoor gear—whether it’s parkas, hiking boots, or cargo pants—depending on the weather and region. However, while dining in restaurants, a neat casual appearance is generally preferred and appreciated.

Local travel tips Peru often include guidance on bargaining. Haggling is acceptable in markets, with many taxi drivers, and even at some hotels. Still, it’s important to be polite and not push too hard. Also, if you're taking photos of people in traditional attire—especially women, children, or elders—it’s customary to offer a small tip, as this has become standard practice with the rise in tourism.
