Customs that enhance travel

Mauritius Etiquette

Mauritius Etiquette

You’ll note that the majority of Mauritians are quite genuinely polite, so be sure to practise your manners and take note that many Mauritians speak both English and French - so it might be a good idea to refresh your French skills too. The very French cheek to cheek greeting and goodbye is used quite actively so don’t be shocked to see and experience it in social situations.

Tipping is quite normal on the island so we suggest a tip based on service. Most locals are quite attentive but you’ll find that, as with anywhere, service can fluctuate. For good service we suggest anything between 10-20% at a restaurant or at your hotel and an extra 200 rupees or so to a particularly helpful taxi driver.
