Tipping in Australia – All You Need to Know About Tipping and Service Etiquette
Planning a trip to Australia?
Knowing the tipping customs and etiquette of the places you’re visiting can help your travels go much more smoothly. The minimum wage is high in Australia compared to many countries. Tips are not required but appreciated. What the traveller should know.

At fine dining restaurants a 10% tip is appreciated for excellent service, but it is not expected.
Dinning Groups
Some restaurants automatically add an 8 to 10 percent service charge on parties of eight or more. Tipping is a bit more, but look at your bill first.
3. Payments & Charges – GST
Menu prices in Australia include the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST), so the price you see is the price you pay.
Weekend & Bank Holiday Allowance Some cafes and restaurants add a small surcharge for Sundays and public holidays to help cover the cost of the extra staffing. They are generally printed on the menu or at the entrance of the place.
4. Australian Social Etiquette—Buying a Round of Drinks
In pubs in Australia, friends take turns shouting round of drinks. If someone buys you a drink, you should buy them one back.
Everyday Manners Aussies are friendly and laid back. You often hear a simple "Hi," "G'day," or "Hello." Be nice, respect people’s space and queue patiently.
Beach & Nature Norms
• Swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches with lifeguards
• Dispose of rubbish properly.
• Respect wildlife and nature in protected areas.
5. Travel while paying
Australia is a largely cashless country and contactless card payments are taken almost everywhere. Some businesses may charge a small fee to pay by card.
Payments between groups are quick and easy, and it is generally easy to split the bill at restaurants.
