Egyptian Culture

Much like many other eastern countries, in Egypt, overly intimate behaviour in public (such as kissing and cuddling) is not allowed and disapproved of and will generally attract unwanted attention. Further to this, dress conservatively and remember that despite the heat, shorts are only really socially acceptable at resorts and shirts should always cover your shoulders - both men and women. If you’re visiting a mosque then you should always dress modestly - this means covering from wrist to ankle for the women and men from below the shoulder to below the knee. You’ll note that it’s obligatory to remove shoes (or wear overshoes where available).

Another important thing to remember - is the function of your left and right hands. The left hand is always used for “unclean” functions, such as putting on shoes and the like, while the right hand is used for eating (always place food in your mouth from the right hand!).
