Egypt brings out the explorer in every traveller. Start with a visit to the Valley of the Kings to see Tutankhamun’s tomb and mummy, and then wander through some of the valley’s other 68 tombs, such as those of Seti I, Ramses VI, and Pharaoh Ay of the 18th Dynasty, many of which are still decorated with stunning murals that have survived 1000’s of years and millions of tourists from the Greek and Roman periods through to now. Next head to Cairo, Egypt’s cavernous capital, that’s filled with labyrinthine bazaars, ornate churches and mosques, remote desert monasteries and world class museums – from the fascinating ancient Egyptian finds in the Egyptian Museum to the Coptic Museum, which traces the earliest days of Islam and Christianity through galleries full of Coptic Art.
Take a Nile cruise and stop off at the Pyramids of Giza and the staggering Sphinx, see the Temple of Osiris in Philae and cruise along the banks of miles of undulating desserts filled with ancient ruins and and millions of stories waiting to be uncovered. Then visit Edfu, Dendara, or another of Egypt’s other waterside temples. Afterwards, trek into the White Desert to find traces of Roman outposts, strange rock formations, vast sand dunes and bewitching vistas of sun and sand that shimmer along the horizon. For something a little different take a visit to ruins of the ancient Egyptian capital of Tanis or the breathtaking Desert Breath – a beautiful piece of modern art that resembles a huge crop circle in the middle of the desert and is slowly eroding back into the sands – soon to be forgotten.
To get the most from a trip to Egypt, it is vital not to assume that anyone who approaches you is on the make. Too many tourists do, and end up making little contact with an extraordinarily friendly people. Even in response to insistent offers or demands, try to avoid being rude or aggressive in refusing.
