Morocco Travel Guide: Explore Cities & Culture

Begin your journey in Morocco in the illustrious city of Tangier - Europe’s gateway to Africa- which sits on the northwest corner of the continent. Far removed from its days as a centre for international espionage and general seediness, the city now positions itself as an accessible Mediterranean beach resort - which is modern, safe and vibrant. Explore the casbah and the Grand Mosque, the beach promenade and the charming Petit Socco where you can refuel with a delicious glass of Moroccan mint tea. Next, head to the laid back streets of Meknes to see the Ville Imperiale and the Roman Ruins, before spending a day or two in the bustling city of Fez to get lost in the cavernous Fez el Bali souk. Those in search of a desert experience in Morocco could do worse than visiting the tiny village of Merzouga to see the Erg Chebbi dunes and catch your first glimpses of the enchanting Sahara. A memory that will last forever. Now take a trip to Aït Benhaddou to see the stunning visage of the red brick architecture against a backdrop of desert dunes and mountains, and then head off into the High Atlas Mountains to trek along the fabulous mountain scenery before journeying towards mysterious Marrakesh. Once you arrive, spend a few days exploring the warren-like alleyways of the old city, exploring the sights, sounds and smells of the Jemaa el-Fna,relaxing in a hammam and adventuring into the desert to journey over the sand dunes on camel back or in a convoy of 4x4’s. When the heat of the desert sun and the raucousness of the souks becomes too much, move onwards to the idyllic coastal city of Essaouira which is a haven for windsurfers (attracted by the city’s reputation for almost year round wind), and is filled with boutiques and art galleries
