The fabulous landscape of Costa Rica has no less than 129 volcanoes reaching from its surface – some of which are historically active. The sides of the volcanoes are highly fertile and often covered in swathes of lush rainforest, though it’s the craters that are most interesting. Poás is one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes and its crater lake is a bubbling pool of acidic water that spurts into the air when gases build up.
