Antarctica is generally got a place of mystery and adventure.  Long before the cruise ships and scientific facilities of today, brave adventurers came to this frozen continent to see that arrived at the bottom of the world. Their journeys got dangerous, with extreme temperatures and a lot of trouble. Nowadays, their narratives attract citizens from all around earth.

Roald Amundsen is one of the most famous names in Antarctic history. Amundsen, who was born in Norway, was the first person to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911. Their group carefully planned their trip, crossing the ice in sled dogs. Amundsen’s journey and preparation allowed it to accomplish one of the best achievements in polar adventure.

Another famous adventurer is Robert Falcon Scott of the United Kingdom. Scott directed the Terra Nova Expedition and arrived at the South Pole in January 1912. But he and his team got there a few months after Amundsen.  Scott and his men struggled with terrible weather, no food and exhaustion on the return. Unfortunately they never made it back to camp. Their story was one of courage, determination and sacrifice.

Sir Ernest Shackleton is believed to be one of the top leaders of all time. His iconic It journey to cross the Antarctic began in 1914. But the Endurance got stuck in the ice and eventually crushed. He and his men trapped in one of the most hostile environments on earth. Due to all of this, to be able to get each and every one of his team back home safely. He is a legend in he and ability to remain cool under pressure.

Another important adventurer to help increase information on Antarctica was James Clark Ross. During his journey in the 1840s he discovered the Ross Sea and Ross Ice Shelf. His journeys led to in the naming of Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's major volcanoes. His results got of the highest priority for future exploration and scientific research.

One of the earliest journeys to winter in Antarctica was the Norwegian adventurer Carsten Borchgrevink. It was, indeed, very difficult to survive the long, dark Antarctic winter, but his team got important facts that can help future travelers discover Antarctica better.

Australia’s Douglas Mawson is also recalled for his extraordinary successes. He led a number of scientific trips and enjoyed years exploring the Antarctic. In one of his journeys, Mawson faced many struggles, losing two members of his team. He succeeded and made it back to safety, despite the dangers and feeling lonely. His drive and strength done it one of the most popular polar adventurers.
