Time to Travel: The Ideal Seasons for Antarctica

Choosing the right time for your Antarctica trip can take your journey to another level, so we at Skanda Holidays understand it. The best time to travel is between November and March (the Southern Hemisphere summer) when it is milder and wildlife is most active. Antarctica is a destination that changes as the season progresses, with something different each month. November is the start of the Antarctic summer, with new snow, great views and the courtship and nesting of penguins. There is less crowd and long daylight hours, making it a great time for photography and peaceful excursions. December begins the peak summer and slightly warmer temperatures, and active seal colonies. Penguins begin laying their eggs and the long daylight hours mean more time for excursions and sightseeing. January is the warmest month in Antarctica and one of the busiest months to visit. Penguin chicks are beginning to hatch, wildlife viewing is at its peak, and conditions are ideal for Zodiac cruising and kayaking adventures. February is reputedly one of the better months for whale watching as the surrounding waters tend to be more active with humpback whales, minke whales and orcas. At this time, penguin chicks are growing rapidly and large numbers of seals can be seen resting on the ice. End of the expedition season and less crowded in March. Beautiful sunsets and great photo opportunities. The whale activity is still high and the calm environment makes this a favorite month for many experienced travelers. During the summer season in the Antarctic visitors can enjoy incredible wildlife encounters, breathtaking scenery and unforgettable experiences that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Each month the White Continent throws up something new, whether it be a chance to see penguins and whales or to explore glaciers and massive icebergs. There is no bad time to visit Antarctica whether you are looking for pristine landscapes, active wildlife or quiet and scenic expeditions. At Skanda Holidays, we help travellers to find the best time to explore this remarkable destination and create memories of a lifetime. Knowing the seasons and what each month offers can help you choose the perfect time for your once-in-a-lifetime Antarctic adventure.
