Costa Rica is a year-round destination, thanks to its tropical climate, but the best time to visit depends on your travel preferences. The country has two main seasons—dry and green (rainy)—each offering unique experiences.
This is the most popular time to visit Costa Rica, especially for beach lovers and outdoor adventures. Expect sunny days, clear skies, and perfect conditions for exploring destinations like Guanacaste, Manuel Antonio, and Arenal Volcano. Wildlife spotting is excellent, and activities like zip-lining, hiking, and surfing are at their best. However, this is also peak tourist season, so prices are higher and popular spots can be crowded.
The rainy season transforms Costa Rica into a vibrant green paradise. Showers are usually short and occur in the afternoon, leaving mornings ideal for sightseeing. This is the best time for budget travelers, fewer crowds, and incredible scenery—waterfalls are fuller, and rainforests are at their most beautiful. It’s also a great time for wildlife enthusiasts, especially for turtle nesting on the Caribbean coast (Tortuguero).
While much of the country experiences heavier rainfall, the Caribbean coast enjoys sunny and dry weather, making it a great time to visit places like Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero.
