Begin in Reykjavik - Iceland’s tiny but very explorable capital. Spend a day walking along its quaint stony streets and staring out to the Atlantic from the harbour before dining in one of the city’s cool new restaurants. If you’re a wildlife lover, then arrange a day trip from Reykjavik to go whale spotting along the gorgeous Faxafloi Bay. Those looking for the ultimate spa experience should then travel out to the sublime waters of the Blue Lagoon for a day of luxuriating amongst the stark lava landscapes. Next, take a day to explore the wonderful Golden Circle, taking in the stunning waterfall at Gullfoss, the Pingvellir open-air parliament and the hot waterspouts at the Grand Geysir.
If you’d like to see more of Iceland’s towns, then we suggest taking a trip to Akureyri on the north coast, which makes for a fantastic summer foodie spot, thanks to its thriving restaurant and bar scene. If you’d prefer to delve deep into Iceland’s countryside, then take a trip to the incredible Vatnajökull National Park to see its geysers, waterfalls (don’t miss Dettifoss - Europe’s largest waterfall) and jagged volcanic peaks. Winter travellers should spend a day in the ice caves that form each winter and then head out to the wilderness at night to hunt for the unmistakable neon lights of the aurora borealis.
