Indonesia Etiquette

Always try to dress modestly when visiting a place of worship - this means covering up your arms and wearing long shorts or trousers. Public displays of affection are mostly frowned upon - but pay particular attention to this whilst visiting a place of worship. Try not to use your index finger when pointing - use instead your palm whether pointing or beckoning someone towards you. If you find yourself inside a temple during a religious event then ensure that the level of your head is never higher than that of the priest, and never walk in front of people whilst in prayer.Tipping isn’t a strictly normal practise in Indonesia - though many restaurants will add a 5-10% service charge. Taxi drivers however, are not often quick to give change so most people will round up the fare to make things a little easier.
