Our favourite stop along the West Coast, though, goes to San Francisco, a beautiful city lined with Victorian townhouses and high, view-filled hills. Look out for the fog-covered Golden Gate Bridge and the huge Bay Bridge that links San Francisco with Oakland. Get the best view by taking the cable cars to the hills, like always-stunning Telegraph Hill. Of course, no trip to San Francisco is complete without a boat trip across the bay to the infamous Alcatraz Island. The evening is our favourite time to visit, specifically to watch the sun set over ‘The Rock’, before trampling through the darkened cell house and sailing back across The Bay at night. If you’re craving more nature, then take a short trip north to Muir Woods National Monument on Mount Tamalpais, which is filled with gigantic Redwoods. The star of the West Coast’s nature, though, comes in the form of the awe-inspiring Unesco-listed Yosemite National Park. The park area is filled with dramatic waterfalls, giant sequoias, and abundant wildlife and is easily one of America’s most stunning natural habitats.
