It’s only fitting that one of Europe smallest country should be home to the continent’s largest national park. It’s made up of the former Skaftafell and Jokulsargljufur National Parks and is a haven of intensely powerful waterfalls, idyllic lowland rivers, huge glaciers, vast mountains and the prettiest of babbling brooks. Of the many treasures that bejewel the park, it’s the Skaftafell wilderness area which takes the crown. Within it you’ll find so much to see that it could take a lifetime to find them all but the highlights include the huge Skaftafellsjokull and Svínafellsjokull glacier tongues, the hypnotic Svartifoss waterfall, the soaring icy peak of oraefajokull Volcano and the lush Baejarstaðarskógur woodlands.
